Abstract: »During the Indonesian War of Independence, the Dutch military employed some 220,000 Indonesian and Dutch troops. Tens of thousands of them at one point or another, had sexual contact with someone. This paper looks at how the Dutch military leadership wrestled with these intimate sexual encounters: the non-violent ones and the violent ones. It analyses the intercultural dynamics of the military policies and how notions about race, class and gender shaped them. It focuses on the cultural and sexual education the army provided for the troops, the policies it adopted regarding marriage and intimate contact and how it dealt with sexual violence.« (Source: International Research Network “Military, War and Gender/Diversity / Militär, Krieg und Geschlecht/Diversität”)
